Not so Fast and Furious; Safety First for Savings

Okay so Vin Diesel doesn’t count as a young driver so he probably won’t be looking at this article and thinking “Wow, I’m going to save me some cash” (or however he would say it), but if he was 17 or 18 and had just got out onto the road we’re sure he’d find this a good read.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have suggested that young drivers in the UK could see their insurance policies cut by as much as £370 if the government introduces new safety standards.

It’s long been suggested that those younger drivers that hit the roads are all ‘boy racers’ showing off for their friends and taking lots of risks when it comes to driving their first car. But we all know that this isn’t necessarily true for everyone. So what can be done to spare the good drivers the pain of high premiums?

At their current levels, young drivers can be paying in excess of £1,800 annually for their cover.

However, ABI have suggested that a potential one year minimum learning period for young drivers is the way to cut down insurance premiums by about 20%.

It is also calling for a maximum number of passengers that a new driver can carry in their car at any one time, restrictions on driving at night and a zero tolerance for blood alcohol levels, which could lower the amount of deaths on the road from reckless and hazardous driving.

Driving Costs Down

This comes after a string of new policies set in motion to drive the cost of being on the road down; with new tyre labeling systems being announced in November and new insurance rules from the EU taking gender out of the equation back in December 2012.

Another way in which insurers are trying to help you cut down the cost of your annual premium is through devices installed into your car, that allows you to show how safely you drive which will bring down the cost of insuring your car each time the collected data is reviewed. You can find out more about this type of device by looking in our car insurance table on Which4U.co.uk.
